four open positions in Kiruna. All four positions have strong
connections to EISCAT-related research.
- a staff scientist specialising in ionospheric physics (permanent
employment)
- a research engineer specialising in electronics (permanent employment)
- a postdoctoral researcher in space physics (three-year contract)
- a PhD student in space physics (four-year contract)

negotiable.

EISCAT AB invites applications for *observing time on the EISCAT
facilities in 2026*, by individual scientists, research groups, and
consortia*throughout the world on equal, competitive basis*. This means
that anyone can apply, independent of whether or not the applicant is
from an EISCAT member country.
The present call is the first one for 2026. In total,*200 hours(*) of
experiment time* are open for international, peer-reviewed competition,
and are available for the use of any of the current EISCAT facilities.
Roughly half of this time is allocated in each call.

Dear Colleagues,
The Space Physics and Astronomy Research Unit (https://www.oulu.fi/en/university/faculties-and-units/faculty-science/space…) at the University of Oulu, Finland, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position. The successful candidate will work in the project "Ion-neutral interactions in arctic upper atmosphere observed with EISCAT3D (IONTRACE)" to develop novel incoherent scatter radar measurement and data analysis techniques, and to use them for observing ion-neutral interactions in the high-latitude ionosphere-thermosphere system. The position is fixed-term until 31 August 2029, starting 01 September 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Dear Colleagues,
due to recent events (see below), it is with great regret that we have to postpone to 2026 the 22nd International EISCAT Symposium 2025 and 49th Annual European Meeting on Atmospheric Studies by Optical Methods. We anticipate to host the meeting in conjunction with the 50-year anniversary of EISCAT in August 2026 in Kiruna.
We understand that this is of great inconvenience to you, esp those of you who have already booked flights etc. We sincerely apologise for the situation.
What lead to this?
The old church of Kiruna has to be moved to a new location due to the expansion of the Kiruna mine (LKAB). Mid-April it was announced that this will happen during the Symposium week, which caused all accommodation in Kiruna to be instantly sold out, as well as flights. There’s huge interest by tourist companies as well as global media.
Subsequently, it won’t be possible to have a Symposium with strong on-site participation. We have evaluated the possibility to arrange a hybrid meeting instead. However, now it has become clear that we cannot get catering etc for a much smaller group as originally planned.
Moreover, a 50-year anniversary meeting really calls for in-person participation and a hybrid meeting is not desirable.
After careful consideration, and with great regret, EISCAT has decided to postpone the meeting to 2026: “let’s do it properly or not at all.”
Again, we apologise sincerely for the situation, and we hope to welcome you here next year!

Let me share information of ISAR-8, which is an international symposium for arctic researches hosted by my institute (NIPR), and it will be held in person from October 28 to October 31, 2025 at Tokyo Tama Mirai Messe close to NIPR.

One of regular sessions, R7 Geospace, is now calling for abstracts related to studies on middle-atmosphere, upper-atmosphere, ionosphere, and magnetosphere in arctic regions based on various techniques including remote-sensing, in-situ measurements, and numerical simulations. Of course, we also welcome abstracts on EISCAT and EISCAT_3D.
We have two invited speakers for the session as follows:
Prof. Wojciech J. Miloch in UiO and Prof. Jörg Gumbel in Stockholm University
I understand that it is a busy time for classes in October, plus there is European Space Weather Week in the same week as ISAR-8, but I am very happy if you and/or your colleagues, as well as students, consider possibilities to submit to R7 session and join ISAR-8 on site. The important thing to remember is that this is the most pleasant time of year in Japan, and it is the perfect time to go trekking in the mountains around Tokyo.

The first human spaceflight in a polar orbit (Fram2) will launch next week - Tue April 1 2025 ~ 3UT! The Fram2 astronauts are in a scientific collaboration called the SolarMaX project with The University Centre in Svalbard and the ARCTICS ISSI group.
The goal of the SolarMaX project is to create an open-source database of aurora photographs for researchers over a 3-5 day orbit window. This collection will include videos captured from Fram2, as well as those taken from the ground by anyone on Earth who can observe the aurora and measurements from scientific instruments.
During the mission, scientists and citizen scientists will monitor conditions for certain types of what we call ‘weird aurora’. The astronauts will then be alerted if any types are spotted along their orbit path, so they can be ready. Photos should be submitted to the Skywarden database for researchers to use and a selection of people who do this will win prizes that have been to space.
If you have instruments that could be useful for the mission, then turn them into high-resolution mode and let us know! If you can spread the word about the mission in your network then that is also great - anyone can take part using a camera or smartphone in any area with the opportunity for aurora!
