The tape robotics and a large amount of the hardware behind the Antares tape service at RAL is now 5 years old. We are about to commence a major programme of work to service, replace, and upgrade relevant parts of the hardware. Originally this was planned to take place during the CERN winter shutdown however due to delays in the procurement process outside our control most of the hardware will now be delivered in March.
While much of the work can be carried out transparently or with only minor degradation to the service, it will be necessary to have a complete downtime to work on the robotics for 4 days, from Monday 28th April at 05:00 UTC until Thursday 1st May at 14:00 UTC[1]. We appreciate that this is very close to the planned start of stable beams and therefore wanted to give experiments as much notification as possible, so they have time to plan any necessary mitigating actions. Unfortunately, we do not have any flexibility in the dates.
The overall programme of work includes:
Service / preventive maintenance on the Tape Robot.
Upgrade of the Spectra TFinity Robot to LumOS.
Installation of TS1170 drives and 83PB of additional media.
Installation of additional Tape Servers and Fibre Channel equipment.
Replacement of the EOS buffer front end. These nodes will have IPv6 enabled and also have direct access to the LHCOPN link as well as be on the LHCONE.
If you have any questions about this, please contact your relevant RAL VO contact; Alex Rogovski (LHCb, ALICE), Brij Jashal (ATLAS), Katy Ellis (CMS) or submit a GGUS ticket to RAL-LCG2.
Thank you for your understanding.

Dear all,
We would like to inform you that the migration of the Check-in production instance from SimpleSAMLphp and COmanage to Keycloak is scheduled for Wednesday, 19 March, between 08:00-14:00 CET. During this maintenance window, the service will be unavailable.
As part of the transition, a metadata update in eduGAIN is required. This may impact logins from academic identity providers in eduGAIN throughout the day until the updated metadata propagates to the respective IdPs. Based on our experience from the demo migration, we will request the metadata update late in the evening on the previous day to minimise disruptions during working hours.
Expected Impacts:
1. Metadata propagation delays: Some Identity Providers may not automatically update their metadata. Their support teams may need to be contacted to explicitly update it.
2. Deprecation of COmanage API: VOs that rely on the current COmanage API for managing user memberships and roles will need to submit a ticket to obtain new API credentials and adjust their API clients following the documentation at https://github.com/rciam/keycloak-group-management#rest-api
3. VO and group information from Perun will not be available: We can take a snapshot of VO group memberships from Perun on the day before the migration and import them into Keycloak with all memberships set to expire one year after the migration date. After the migration, any VO/group membership updates in Perun will not be reflected in Keycloak. Group admins and members will be able to manage changes directly in Keycloak.
4. Preferred username generation: The preferred username is not generated during sign-up through Keycloak yet. If users need access to services that rely on this attribute, they will need to open a ticket. However, this will not affect existing users, who will be migrated to Keycloak along with their current preferred username.
5. Deprecation of LDAP: The LDAP service will not be available after the migration. Services that rely on the current LDAP interface for viewing user memberships and roles will need to submit a ticket to obtain API credentials for migrating to the group management API.
6. Role information from GOCDB will not be available: Integration with GOCDB will not be available at this stage. If necessary, it may be implemented later.
7. Deprecation of WeChat social login: Users who currently rely on WeChat for authentication will no longer be able to log in using this method after the migration. Affected users will need to transition to an alternative login option (e.g., eduGAIN or other social identity providers).

Dear all,
The database system that underpins GOCDB experienced operational issues overnight, starting around 18:00 UTC on 28 Jan, resulting in an outage of GOCDB.
The relevant team has investigated, identified the root cause, and is confident normal operations have been resumed.
Access to GOCDB should now be restored.
We will endeavour to reduce the impact of such outages going forward. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.
Kind Regards,
The GOCDB team

Dear colleagues,
last week, many of us learned of a severe issue affecting any GEANT
TCS certificate requests, for hosts and users, including renewals.
Service interruption is highly likely starting at the beginning of
January 2025, which may last for a while (how long we cannot yet
predict). The duration and extent of the interruption, as well as any
secondary impacts, cannot yet be fully estimated since it depends on
several factors not detailed in this message.
For users, the ACTIONABLE RECOMMENDATION at this moment is:
* Start planning the renewal of -- AND RENEW over the next few weeks,
and BEFORE the New Year's break! -- any user certificates signed by
one of the GEANT TCS CAs.
* Renew your personal certificates via the /clientgeant endpoint:
https://cert-manager.com/customer/__NREN_NAME__/idp/clientgeant
Meanwhile, take good note of any communications sent by your national
or regional NREN - bearing in mind their communications may end up in
a different department or shared service center of your institution.
======================================================================
To check if a certificate is affected:
openssl x509 -noout -issuer -in $CERTIFICATE | grep GEANT
where $CERTIFICATE can be $HOME/.globus/usercert.pem for example.
======================================================================
More news will be provided hopefully soon.

The UK ARGUS service supported at the Tier1 at RAL will be decommissioned on the 2nd December 2024. This is after CERN’s notification of deprecating their instance back in July (https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/LCG/WLCGOpsMeetingWeek240729)
After this date, the ARGUS service hosted at argusngi.gridpp.rl.ac.uk will be unreachable.
If sites are utilising their ARGUS instances for user mappings, we recommend migrating to native solutions found in Nordugrid ARC-CE, HTCondor-CE or similar.
Any questions or concerns please inform the RAL Tier1 Grid Services team.
